Eastern Slope of the Sangre de Cristos

This panoramic view of the eastern slope of the Sangre de Cristo mountains is viewed from the road to the ranch in the foothills just west of Las Vegas, New Mexico near San Geronimo. This is the view General Kearny saw when he entered the area now known as Kearney's Gap. It is located between Santa Fe and Las Vegas and it allowed wagon trains to continue along the Santa Fe Trail without having to cross the mountains. Kearney claimed this land as The New Mexico Territory from the roof of the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, a landmark of the region.

New Mexico Enchantment Mosaics thanks Cornelia and Norman Compton for sharing the beauty and tranquility of the ranch with all of us through these photographs.
