If you ask someone who has either lived in New Mexico or has visited the state which element first struck them, they would most likely reply, "The light." The open quality of the vast skies produces awesome variations of the vibrant colors naturally occurring in this region of the southwest. Gary Sanchez of Albuquerque, has captured the essence of 'the light' in his paintings and art. Gary is a native New Mexican who was named 'Best New Artist' at last years' New Mexico State Fair. As a result of his success he was honored by being named a judge for artist's entries in the 2003 State Fair. His works are on display in various galleries and are exhibited in regional and national art shows. Below is 'La Estrellita' (Little Star), the award winning entry for 2002. Gary travels the state exploring sites for its unrivaled, unique beauty. His subject matter ranges from the isolated banks of the Rio Grande to the world famous Santuario de Chimayo, a small church in northern New Mexico to which thousands make a 'pilgrimage' during the holy week of Easter. (Shown below.)
His gift for seizing upon the subtle nuances of shadow and light, shape and symmetry and the richness of earthly color bring to life landscapes and vistas. To stare into one of his works is to place oneself into the arms of the panorama before them, shutting everything else out. Gary Sanchez's work is a new facet opening up fine art in New Mexico. While Gary's future website is under construction please feel free to contact him via this site's e-mail address. More of his art will be forthcoming on this site in the near future.
